Notes from the Cellar

Castell Banfi Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG 2000

100% Sangiovese Brunello. “A darn good one, with tobacco, citrus, and herbs on the nose. Runs a bit simple and grapy on the palate, but it’s overwhelmingly ripe, healthy and full-force. Nothing tricky here, just clean cherry, plum and chocolate flavors sitting comfortably on a medium-to-full frame.”  ~Wine Enthusiast.

Hess Collection Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Merlot grapes. The 2004 vintage started with an early spring giving the vines a boost to start off their growing season. This strong start was followed by a warm, consistent weather pattern in summer that ended with several hot fast ripening periods. This short and sweet harvest produced a memorable 2004 vintage with low yield, high-quality grapes characterized by ripeness and intensity.

RATED: 92 points by The Wine Enthusiast.

Clos du Mont-Olivet Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvee du Papet 2005

Has lots of grip, with a very stony undertow carrying notes of wet pebble, sweet earth, licorice coffee, and fig. Pretty lavender and spice box hints flitter in the background as well. Dark and chewy on the finish, for now, this needs time to settle into itself.

Best from 2009 to 2030. RATED: 95 points by the Wine Spectator.

Clos du Mont-Olivet Chateauneuf-du Pape La Cuvee du Papet 2003

Packed and tight, with sage, licorice root, black currant, plum and tobacco aromas and flavors supported by pronounced ferrous and hot stone notes. Yet despite its power, it has remarkably lush tannins running through the lengthy finish. This has a great expression of terroir.

Best from 2007 through 2025. RATED: 94 points by The Wine Spectator.

Joh. Jos. Prum Riesling Auslese Gold Cap Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2005

Silky, harmonious and refined, with apricot, apple, lime and mineral aromas and flavors on a light-weight frame. Balanced, its hidden structure evident in the tanginess on the finish and lingering aftertaste of baked apple. Puts it all together.

Best from 2009 through 2030. RATED: 98 points COLLECTIBLE by The Wine Spectator.

Domaine D. Bocquenet Echezeaux 2003

Produced from a 0.4067-hectare parcel located in the highest part of its Grand Cru, the 2003 Echezeaux comes from 43 and 14-year old vines. It explodes from the glass with black fruits and myriad spices. A backward, massively concentrated wine, it is hugely powerful, chewy and dense. This muscular, deep, medium to full-bodied offerings firm, almost rustic, structure demands patience.

Mature: 2014 through 2030. RATED: 92-95 points by Robert Parker.

Tor Cabernet Sauvignon Mast-Cimarossa 2005

Tor Kenward has hit home runs with a number of his Cabernets. Offering up notes of blueberries, black raspberries, and currants in a soft, Pomerol-like style, the 2005 possesses sweet tannins, and a plush texture as well as finish.

RATED: 93 points by Robert Parker.
